Trauma, PTSD, and Complex PTSD: Understanding the Impact

Experiencing highly stressful, frightening, or distressing events can lead to what is commonly referred to as trauma. When delving into emotional or psychological trauma, we're considering two crucial aspects:

  1. Perceived Traumatic Situations: These are events or situations that an individual interprets as highly distressing or threatening. This perception is deeply subjective and can vary from person to person.
  2. Impact on the Individual: How these experiences affect a person is a multifaceted process. It encompasses emotional, psychological, and even physical dimensions.


Traumatic events don't discriminate by age; they can occur at any stage of life. What's significant is that the effects can be enduring. Some individuals may experience the immediate aftermath of trauma, while for others, its impact might manifest years down the line.

It's important to note that trauma is highly individualized. Your experience may be rooted in various aspects of your identity. This could range from enduring harassment, perhaps from narcissistic family members, to facing bullying at school or in the workplace. It might also involve encountering discrimination as an LGBTQ+ individual or experiencing the harrowing effects of war as a soldier or refugee.

Understanding Trauma Responses:

One intriguing aspect of trauma is the spectrum of responses individuals exhibit. These are often categorized into four main types:


  1. Fight: Some individuals respond to perceived threats by adopting an aggressive stance. This can manifest as confrontational behavior or an assertive approach.
  2. Flight: The instinct to escape or avoid a threatening situation characterizes this response. It's a survival mechanism that seeks safety through distance.
  3. Freeze: When confronted with trauma, some individuals may experience a sense of paralysis. This is a self-protective response, akin to 'playing dead' in the face of danger.
  4. Fawn: This response involves a strong inclination towards appeasement and seeking to please others. It's often observed in individuals who have experienced repeated or prolonged trauma.

Research on the neurobiological consequences of psychological trauma sheds light on how our bodies have evolved to respond to perceived threats. These responses are nearly instantaneous, reflexive survival patterns that are deeply ingrained in our physiology.

In conclusion, recognizing and comprehending the intricacies of trauma, its various manifestations, and the diverse ways individuals respond is essential in providing effective support and therapy for those who have experienced it. This understanding forms the cornerstone of assisting individuals on their journey towards healing and recovery.
